The #BlackLivesMatter is the movement that was formulated in 2013, after a man shot and killed an armed black teenager. A California activist by the name of, Alicia Garza, responded to the judges decision after the murderer was alleged to have been cleared of the teenagers murder, she responded by a Facebook post, " Black people I love you. I love us. Our lives matter, that is when the campaigns and the hashtags sprung from and the movement has been on since.

I can remember seeing the police brutality in the news, my very first thought was, is this another apartheid happening in a democratic country or is it just how black people are destined to live. The #BlackLivesMatter  awakened so many emotions in me, mostly frustrations, because honestly when and where rather did black lives really ever matter?  They have never ever did matter, and we have always witnessed this, from generation to generation. I guess the point I am trying to make is what can a mere hashtag change, what can few campaigns with celebrity do, can they really make a difference, how many times have these campaigns been done but still black blood must spill.

 ADVANTAGES OF USING SOCIAL MEDIA

No one can honestly deny the fact that social media is very advantageous to brands and also to the public relations professionals. social media has the power to reach a lot of people in a number just a few seconds, and that is where the power of social media lies, social media can help professionals interact with people, especially if they are may be representing brands, they get the opportunity to interact with the consumers or clients of that particular brands. social media is very convenient and almost everyone is opting for it these days.

DISADVANTAGES OF USING SOCIAL MEDIA

The disadvantages of using social media may be that if public relations professionals participate on social media and engage in topics such as BlackLivesMatter and not personally engaging or supporting the movement, this may make the brands they are representing seem as though, they do not care about what is happening and all they care about is sitting behind the desk and texting about what is happening.
Lack of feedback is also a disadvantage to professionals engaging on social media, reason being that if you do not receive any feedback then clearly it means that, no impact was done, and its also hard controlling negative feedback on social platforms, especially with the fact that negative feedback is bound to attract attention and may be damaging to brands
.

 RECOMMENDATIONS

Public relations practitioners need to know when and how to use social, they should post in-relation to that particular topic. i know that black twitter is fun and people enjoy posts most of the time when someone is getting trolled, however in such sensitives issue such as this one, you shouldn't risk being controversial, such movements carry a lot of emotions and seriousness about them. https://www.good.is/videos/clinton-speaks-blacklivesmatter

  1. Blacklivesmatter is a very critical and sensitive topic and i feel like many people are turning a blind eye on it especially here in South Africa. People are just on social media to troll people I liked the fact that you mentioned it on your recommendations i mean people died and parents lost their kids for what? because they are black? I really hope that one day our Spirit of Ubuntu can be regained.

  2. yeah imagine people dying only because of their skin colour, it is not right and it should not be something to be tolerated, it is so sickening because it is being done by people who should be protecting us, the police.

  3. This black lives matter issue should not only focus ob black people only, all lives matter, who's doesn't matter? yes police brutality is wrong but its not only black people who get killed by the police, according to me, the topic that needs to be discussed here is police brutality, that is what we need to be talking about. everyone's life matters

    1. Well i agree with you all lives matter but the issue here it seems as though the lives that are mostly targeted are black people, and if you read my introduction carefully, what made the black lives matter to be something of such significance is that the police who murder black people always get away scout free

  4. The issue of #Blacklivesmatter will always be discussed as long as racial challenges are surfaced under the carpet, people think coming up with such hashtags will help, it won't. What it will do is it will just make it stop for a moment but three, four months down the line, it will be back to square one, parents need to teach racial importance at an early age and instill the Ubuntu morals in them.

  5. This is deep hey..and as blacks we should acknowledge that we are important and special I feel like in our minds there is still that cloud of bitterness and feel like there is no equality. Yes, black lives matters but each and every individual skin colour matters .

    1. Exactly, we as black people need to love ourselves, though that is not what this black-lives matter is about, its still something we need to do, in fact we need to stand up for each other against these police sagas

  6. It's very disheartening that we have to suffer because of our akin colour. Something that we are given to before were are even born. The worst part is, we still and will forever suffer for that directly and indirectly.

  7. It is very sad hey and what makes me scared is the fact that police who should be protecting us, are the ones doing all this to us, doesn't make sense at all.
