#FeesMustFall is a student headed protest or campaign rather that began 2015, October. It was was started by the University of the Witwatersrand student council., basically the aim of the of the movement was to fight against academic fee increases, though it this may have been achieved, the issue of how the government will manage to pay for these fees is still yet to be revealed. one thing is for sure that the students fought for what they believed in and they came "first". Though the #FeesMustFall had a positive motivation towards it, a lot of damage was done by the marches, leaving universities to deal with the damaged, burnt buildings.

The advantages of using social media for public relations practitioners regarding such topics is that, they get to engage and have a conversation about what is happening, and whatever they write about on social media gets to be read by a lot of people, because a lot of people use social media and Public Relations Professional can target those people and target them as their wide spread audiences.
DISADVANTAGES OF USING SOCIAL MEDIA
There are disadvantages to using social media, these disadvantages can have a huge impact on professionals and the brands in which they are representing. One of the disadvantages is that, using social media you are bound to make mistakes and often time it may be damaging mistakes, for examples, with the #markfishchallenge, black Twitter made fun of the mistake that was made by Mark Fish after posting the wrong picture claiming it was him and the late Hugh Masekela, honestly I think that was a funny mistake to make and so did black Twitter, however had that been a brand making such a mistake the damage was going to be far greater for the brand, the brand would have been perceived as ignorant .https://edition.cnn.com/2015/10/27/africa/fees-must-fall-student-protest-south-africa-explainer/index.html
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA USE
The recommendations i would make for public relations professionals is that they should research about a particular topic that they may want to partake in, the professionals if ever they may want to discuss and post about the fees must fall they should at least must have a bit of background about it, this may help them avoid negative feedback or making mistakes. Do not just post unnecessary stuff on social media, people on social media are not interested to hear about your day, no one has time for that, yes most times social media used for fun, but what professionals need to remember is that they are representing brands and some formality it is needed or rather required. Lastly public relations professionals need to respond to comments on social media and not delete the negative responses, by doing so, the professionals get to engage and take the criticism and improve for next time.
In conclusion, my only hope and wish regarding the #FeesMustFall is that may be use this opportunity to our advantage, may we not have youngsters sitting at home or by the Pakistani-ans shops doing nothing with their lives. The youth needs to take their studies seriously and work hard so they may not fail and then think, hey it doesnt matter, education is free after all.

the issue of fees must fall is a serious issue we live in a country where by very smart kids can't further their education because they are from poor backgrounds. There was a bit of confusion based on the announcement that was made by the President about the free education i feel like social media could have done a lot to make us understand how this free education thing will work.
ReplyDeleteHow can social media make us understand? the only way we could understand this free education issue is by have discussions, engage in discussion take take place in universities, also universities and high schools need to be the ones taking on the responsibility of informing learners and students about the free education system.
DeleteI believe that the youth is the future and South Africa should be investing in them because they are the future leaders, yes South Africa is not at a good state financially but I think giving the little it has through free education would help shape a better future for every.
ReplyDeleteBut this free education, honestly needs to be given to deserving students, students that have the potential to give back in future, when i say give back i mean n terms of having the ability to have an impact in the future when it comes to the economy
DeleteMy concern about free education is that then when the education is free, will it be as of the quality of the education gotten in private institutions. Look at private and public looks for examples. There is a huge gap between learners that went to these different schools. Learners from private schools are advantaged wherever they go. Unlike the learners from public schools. So then when it comes to higher education and the workplace I would think graduates would encounter a similar situation.
ReplyDeleteI see where and understand your concern but as for private and public universities I don't see the difference, because we can compete with those who went to public universities in the corporate world, only difference would be that companies give first preferences to those who went to private universities.
DeleteThe #feesmustfall movement finally turned out to be something which was worth fighting for because the fees has fallen. Who knew that in 2018 first year students would get a chance to be in universities without having to pay anything after all the struggle the past year students faced liked being in jailed, the rubber bullets and teargas. They all endured that just for students to get education and be proud of their selves when they have achieved their qualifications without being excluded because of money.
ReplyDeleteThis movement moved institutions buildings it was bad the situation was tough students got injured, some even went to jail but they never gave up and in my heart I was like this is the leaders South Africa needs who stand for what is best for everyone.
ReplyDeleteWell that is exactly what happened and I believe that we need to find a better way of communicating to get our way, not these violent tactics.
DeleteThe #FeesMustFall campaign played a major role in educationally system we now have access to free education therefore it is our duty to use this opportunity effectively and encourage the younger to take education seriously.
ReplyDeleteYes it has played a major role but will it work, will the state have enough money to cover all these fees in the next 20 years? guess we will have to wait and see.
DeleteI support fully the fees must fall movement. But I think people must understand that, the ideology behind this whole movement is that, no way can salary increases in this country be from 3% and to a hooping average of 6.9% when fees increase by 8%. It does not make financial sense. If indeed the doors of education are open in this country, then why do we have to pay so much, so much that only a few students from upper class families can afford? This whole process of fees must fall will take time I agree; however, whilst looking into other alternatives, can we then consider the fees reduction? And can those students who are unable to continue with their studies due to outstanding fees have them written off or at least discounted?
